Air pollution as we all know has been an ongoing issue that has grasped the attention of plenty of citizens, activists, scientists, and environmentalists in the world. The air pollution on earth has been rising in the past decades but now with the world wide epidemic of COVID-19 the environment has taken a slight turn for the better. Now with CoronaVirus in its peak and the effects that it’s starting to have on both young and old, the government has issued stores, restaurants, and entertainment activities to shut down temporarily. People have been ordered to stay home and follow the rules pertaining to keeping each other safe and not gathering with each other in groups to avoid any spread of germs through contact. Now with quarantine taking place due to COVID-19 an article from NewsFeed written by Aristos Georgiou explains that “scientists are witnessing a big difference in air quality”. Now that people are staying at home and lessening the time they spend outside, there has been an evident decrease in CO2. People are not using transportation as much, car fuels have been dropping, overall quality of air has been better than a few months ago.
The article explains how “Both China and Italy industrial areas are showing strong drops in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) corresponding to reductions in industrial activity and vehicular traffic.” We all know that COVID-19 originated in China and started to spread around the rest of the world rapidly and very unexpectedly. China has taken the proper precautions and enforced heavy quarantine with also reinforcements in sanitation to the point where now there are almost no cases left in China. There have been reductions in the amount of cars on the road, people have been working from home now that companies and businesses have closed down. Scientists claim they have never seen such strong “reduction” of nitrogen dioxide before. Venice is also experiencing the positive effects of air pollution lessening. Mother nature as they referred to has been clearing their water, claiming it has been “unusually clear” recently and one major factor they believe is contributing to this positive environmental effect is the “unusual lack of boat traffic”. Now that there are less boats all of the dirt and remains that are in the bottom of the water don’t come up and therefore leave the water looking clearer. Now with social distancing in effect and heavier laws being enforced due to COVID-19, we are seeing the changes occuring in our environment, changes that scientists and environmentalists have been trying to solve for years. Mother nature has given us the chance to save our earth.
